My Latest Article in InDesign Magazine

August 15th, 2007 | Michael Murphy

The latest isssue of InDesign Magazine (#19-September 2007) features a cover story by yours truly about designing tables in InDesign. The focus is very much on the design challenges particular to tables, and how not to let the speed and ease-of-use of InDesign’s table features stop you from taking the time to improve your rows and columns with time-honored design principles. The article is also posted online as a free PDF download on CreativePro.com.

But do yourself a real favor and take advantage of my promo code — “theindesigner” — when you subscribe to InDesign Magazine. You’ll get a two-year subscription, plus every back issue. It’s probably the best money you can spend on improving your InDesign knowledge.

Learn about Object Libraries in InDesign Magazine

October 11th, 2006 | Michael Murphy

The latest isssue of InDesign Magazine (#14-October 2006) includes a feature story I wrote about InDesign’s Object Libraries. They may not be as sexy as Snippets or as full-blown as Bridge, but this built-in productivity enhancer (which I covered with video in Episode 17) can be a powerful tool and dramatically improve … (read more)

A New Milestone

August 31st, 2006 | Michael Murphy

The subscriber base has now climbed past the 4000 mark as of Episode 26, and Episode 27 seems to be following hot on the heels of that number. I keep getting e-mails from new listeners, and the number of reviews posted on the iTunes Music Store now exceeds the number of episodes I’ve created.

This is a real thrill for me, and I thank everyone out there for their continued support, enthusiasm and feedback. Now let’s see how long it takes to reach 5000.

Record High

August 3rd, 2006 | Michael Murphy

No…I’m not talking about the temperature here in New York (which is freakin’ unbearable). The record high I mean is the number of downloads for the podcast. In April, the number of downloads per episode was 1000. It doubled in July, and less than a month later it has reached a new all-time high. Episode 25 was downloaded more than 3000 times so far. Once again, I have to thank everyone for the support and feedback for the podcast. I hope there are now 3000 designers out in the world who are realizing the benefits of working smarter in the application and finding the time every day to experiment and do better work.

The InDesigner Gets Published

My writing debut (other than this blog) is now available in the current issue of InDesign Magazine (#13 – August/September 2006). I wrote three sidebars for Adam Pratt’s Top Ten Bridge Tips for InDesign Users article. The sidebars cover real-world examples of how I use Bridge in combination with InDesign to improve and streamline my magazine’s workflow. If you’re a subscriber, check it out.
